One of the challenges you face is making sure that you are meeting the needs of all of your students. We know that you work with diverse populations and the support that one student might require can be very different from another.
Today we thought we would offer you the two resources below to help you guide your Native American students through the college admissions process. The first is a detailed resource that covers many of the issues native students may encounter in their college admissions journey, and the second offers support in turning a college dream into reality.
Native American College Student Support Guide
Native American learners currently make up just one percent of all postsecondary students, and these small numbers are due to several factors stretching back hundreds of years. Colonization may be over, but this student population is still challenged by discrimination, cultural misappropriation, lack of access and a scarcity of support programs. In this guide, Native American and non-tribal students can learn about some of the trials facing this community of learners while also tapping into a range of resources meant to bolster Native American student numbers and support them while in school.
Scholarships for Native American Students
Only 17 percent of Native American students enroll in college after high school, while the national average for all students is about 70 percent. Of the Native American students who start college, 82 percent drop out before they finish. This staggering number is mostly due to the lack of academic and financial resources available to many Native American students. Native American students who want to attend college have resources available. This guide provides an overview of the scholarships, grants and potential help available through tribal colleges for Native American students.
