3 Great Ways to Encourage Students to Pursue a STEM Education

  1. Job Opportunities

One of the most exciting aspects of a STEM education is the job opportunities that follow. Whether a student aspires to end world hunger or just wants to play with some really cool, high-tech gadgets, a STEM education can help them get there. STEM work often also comes with a hefty paycheck. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, engineering grads have an average starting salary of almost $20k more than non-STEM grads. Showing a student all the amazing jobs they could pursue is a great way to turn them on to a STEM education.

  1. Summer Intensive Programs

Many universities offer STEM-specific summer programs for high school students that allow them to experience what it will be like to participate in a true university research environment with state-of-the-art equipment and technology. Some of these, like MIT’s Research Science Institute, are extremely competitive, only allowing students from the top of their class to participate. Others, like Georgia Tech’s CEISMC Summer PEAKS, are open to anyone willing to apply. These programs offer hands on experience in a variety of STEM fields, facilitated by university researchers, scientists, and faculty.

  1. STEM PathwaysTM Tours

STEM Pathways™ is an exciting “College-to-Career” program from Explore Colleges that features tours, presentations and conversations with representatives on both college and partner corporate campuses. This is an opportunity for students not only to see what life will be like studying STEM in college, but also where that education could take them.
